Welcome
Welcome to Physician Resources for Speech Recognition. I (Brad Beer) have set up this page to help providers utilize Dragon Speech Recognition software more efficiently on both the PC and the Mac.
UPDATE (7/25/2012): For the past 2 weeks, I've been using Dragon's Medical Practice edition, along with the PowerMic II micro-phone. I've been extremely impressed with the speed, accuracy, and reliability of this combination. This would be my recommendation for all physicians to use. I been using this on the windows 7.
UPDATE (7/19/12): From Nuance's web site: "In clinical settings, Dragon Medical Practice Edition is 15% more accurate than Dragon Medical 10—and 33% more accurate than Dragon Professional 11 when used in clinical settings." GO TO NUANCE'S WEB SITE [LINK]
NOTE (6/26/12): I am currently evaluating Dragon Medical (I have not been happy with the performance of the Professional Version of Dragon on the PC). I will update this site soon with a review of Dragon Medical.

DASH: Dragon Active Scripting HelperDASH is an application for physicians that I created to create complex macros EASILY in Dragon Naturally Speaking Professional, Dragon For Medical, or Dragon Dictate for the Mac.
Please Note: DASH will not work with Dragon Home or Dragon Premium, neither of these versions support Macro Scripting. [INSTRUCTIONS: HOW TO CREATE A DRAGON SCRIPTING MACRO IN DRAGON NATURALLY SPEAKING PROFESSIONAL FOR PC] Download the file you need (either for PC or the Mac). Please note, once downloaded, you will need to right click on the file and "Extract" the files. The PC version of the DASH can then be put any where on your computer. I would suggest either your Desktop or your Documents.
Download the App HERE What Do I (Brad) Use?On my PC I use the following setup:

Is Dragon Medical Worth It?To be honest, I have never used Dragon Medical, so I can not truly answer this question. I have not had any problems with the non-medical versions. I will tell you that the Nuance PowerMic II microphone is designed to work with Dragon Medical. However, the Philips SpeechMike Air can be used with Dragon Naturally Speaking Professional.
NOTE (6/26/12): I am currently evaluating Dragon Medical (I have not been happy with the performance of the Professional Version of Dragon on the PC). I will update this site soon with a review of Dragon Medical. NOTE (7/19/12): After using Dragon Medical, I have been impressed with the speed and the accuracy. It may be worth the extra investment. However, Mercy Providers may need to consider if Mercy will be purchasing an Enterprise License for Dragon. What is DASH?Dragon has some very powerful functionality built into it out of the box. The most powerful tool is called "Advanced Scripting". This functionality, however, requires the user to know how to program in a computer language called Dragon Script. Physicians are not programers, so the Dragon Advanced Scripting Helper or DASH is designed to take the work out of creating powerful macros with Advanced Scripting.
When would I want to use Advanced Scripting as a Macro? If you want to automate a very repetitive task that involves multiple mouse clicks. A few important points to remember. Advanced Scripting Works Best For: pushing buttons or clicking on items that are always in the same spot (if an Item moves on the screen from one use to another, it would not be a good target for a Advanced Scripting Macro. A great example of how to use Advanced Scripting to improve your efficiency would be to create a macro that automates selecting the level of service.

Speech Recognition TipsQuiet Environment: Speech recognition software works best if you are in a quiet environment. Trying to dictate at a nurses station or even in a moderately noisy environment will be very frustrating. I found that I have the best luck dictating in my office.
Use Templates: The real power of speech recognition is when it is combined with templates. Speech recognition programs are never perfect, and the longer your dictation is, the more chances for errors to occur. Rather than dictating a really long note, it works better to use a template and then use Dragon to modify the template. Be Patient: Speech recognition is very complex and no program is perfect. Take your time and learn the program. It is a very powerful tool if you use it correctly. If you expect it to "just work" or IT will fix it, you will be very frustrated. Dragon is not an IT tool, it is a physician tool, DO NOT RELY ON IT FOR DRAGON SUPPORT! What Microphone Is Right For You?Click here to read reviews of several different microphone options.
